My Kanasuji jo weighs in at 677 grams, which is in the right weight range for an oak jo of the standard dimensions. The grain orientation is uniform and runs in the right direction for such an impact weapon.
While I'm of the opinion that unvarnished wooden weapons feel so much better in the hand, the choice of a matte varnish was an excellent one as it doesn't feel sticky nor slippery like some other coated finishes.
There are some surface imperfections that the varnish effectively hides from your touch when running your hand along the staff, but there doesn't appear to be any serious structural issues with the wood.
