I thought about making one of these myself but finally decided to buy this one.
Each of the two striking targets (arms) is supported by a pair of ball bearings. Each rotating arm is is held in position by a coil spring and a "clamshell" of spring steel. When struck, the arm swings over to the other side and locks into place there.
In the dojo, you could have two lines of students on either side which would alternate striking kote-men. The response is fast enough to keep things moving at a very brisk pace. It works much better than what I was thinking of making.
At home you can knock yourself out going back and forth.
I bought this myself but it will probably see more use in our small dojo than at my house. When only one sensei is present, it is harder to watch the students' technique if you have to hold the striking target too, not to mention the fact that the number of strikes in a given time period can be (I estimate) fourfold over hand-held shinai targets.
